Tell us then, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
But Jesus perceived their wickedness and said, “Why test Me, you hypocrites?
Show Me the tax money.” They brought Him a denarius.
He said to them, “Whose is this image and inscription?”
They said to Him, “Caesar’s.”
Then He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are appointed by God.
Therefore whoever resists the authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
Rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil works. Do you wish to have no fear of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from him,
for he is the servant of God for your good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain, for he is the servant of God, an avenger to execute wrath upon him who practices evil.
So it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for the sake of conscience.
For this reason you also pay taxes, for they are God’s servants, devoting themselves to this very thing.
Render to all what is due them: taxes to whom taxes are due, respect to whom respect is due, fear to whom fear is due, and honor to whom honor is due.
Servants, obey your masters in all things according to the flesh, serving not only when they are watching, as the servants of men, but in singleness of heart, fearing God.
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. For you serve the Lord Christ.
Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey them, to be ready for every good work,
Submit yourselves to every human authority for the Lord’s sake, whether it be to the king, as supreme,
or to governors, as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and to praise those who do right.
For it is the will of God that by doing right you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.
As free people, do not use your liberty as a covering for evil, but live as servants of God.
Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh.
For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God a person endures grief, suffering unjustly.
For what credit is it if when you are being beaten for your sins you patiently endure? But if when doing good and suffering for it, you patiently endure, this is favorable before God.
For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God, and if it begins first with us, what shall the end be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
